SDS 2020: Fabrics, Furnishings & Flooring in February

This week is the leading event for architects and designers to explore the best in surface material innovation: Surface Design Show.  The event takes place at the Business Design Centre in London and throws a spotlight on interior and exterior surfaces.

Every year the show hosts exhibiting companies, talks from architecture and design industry experts, new and emerging talents, an awards display and presentation amongst much more. This year over 180 organisations are exhibiting and there are specific areas for architectural lighting and natural stone. We’re also intrigued by the two themes in the ‘Surface Spotlight Live’ areas – ‘Close to Home’ and ‘Materials Live’.

The Surface Spotlight Live includes innovative materials that visitors can interact with and experience hands on. This year, the focus is on the latest advances in technology and relevant topics. Close to Home theme explores the environmental and social impacts of consumption discussing issues of locality and waste in production. The key theme this year is projects that have explored recycling.

The materials live is an installation of materials that can be touched and appreciated for their form.  The idea that we spend too much time looking at our screens and that physical objects and 3D forms can be forgotten about. The showcase is about the process of creation and form following function.

Whilst the Wylde team unfortunately don’t have time to visit the show in London this year, but some of our partners and suppliers are going to be there – we’re particularly excited to see who’s going to take home awards this year. The awards recognise the best use of innovative surface materials that are used in architectural design projects. The awards have been running for 6 years and are judged by some of the leading designers in the surface design industry.

This year there were over 100 entries from across the world; from India to Australia, China and the US. The winners are being judged over the two and a half day showcase and announced on Thursday! You can follow the event as it unfolds here;
