This week in the Wylde blog – forget about a white Christmas, we’re going green with our sustainable festive decor! As interior designers we’re already very conscious of our impact on the planet, incorporating sustainable practices into our design schemes but also every aspect our lives including at home. This year we’re going to give you our tips to infuse eco-friendly charm into your Christmas interior design with these delightful festive decorating ideas!

First stop is to bring the outdoors in by incorporating natural elements into your festive decor. Instead of plastic ornaments, opt for decorations made from materials like wood, pinecones, or recycled paper. You could create a rustic centrepiece with a wooden bowl filled with pinecones, acorns, and dried citrus slices. These earthy touches not only reduce waste but also add a touch of woodland magic to your home.

Get creative by up-cycling old items into unique Christmas ornaments. Transform worn-out crimbo sweaters into cosy, one-of-a-kind tree ornaments or fashion old CDs into dazzling reflective decorations. Get the whole family involved in a DIY ornament-making session to create cherished memories while reducing your environmental footprint. Or bake your own – simply make a flour and water mix, cut your shapes out with a biscuit cutter and bake!

Swap traditional incandescent Christmas lights for energy-efficient LED alternatives. LED lights use significantly less energy and last longer, reducing both your electricity bill and environmental impact. Choose warm white or multicoloured LED strands to maintain the festive glow while minimising the carbon footprint.

Consider alternative Christmas tree options that are kinder to the environment. If you’re not ready to part with the tradition of a tree, opt for a potted evergreen that you can replant after the holiday season. Alternatively, explore creative alternatives like a wooden or cardboard tree that can be reused year after year! Don’t want to splash out on a tree at all? Simply cover a beloved houseplant in some baubles!

DIY Wreaths:

We love a DIY wreath! A wonderfully festive activity for all ages – crafting a unique and eco-friendly Christmas wreath using natural materials from your surroundings. Gather twigs, pinecones, and dried flowers to create a wreath that reflects the beauty of the season without the environmental impact of plastic or artificial decorations. Personalise it with ribbons made from recycled materials or biodegradable twine.

Embracing eco-friendly Christmas decorations not only minimises waste but also adds a meaningful and personal touch to your holiday celebrations, less tack and more class! By making conscious choices in your decor, you can create a warm and inviting space that aligns with your values, making this festive season both merry and green. Cheers to a sustainable and joyful Christmas!
