This week in the Wylde blog we’re looking at the new Pantone Colour of the Year: Very Peri. Here it is, an icy bright grey-purple is the official colour of this year according to one of the best known Colour Matching Systems in the world. Colours of the lavender variety aren’t the easiest to use in interior design – but when developed into a carefully considered design scheme can be soothing yet sharp and professional.  Lighter purples are often chosen for their restful and relaxing qualities hence being a popular colour for bedrooms – but not this shade! Very Peri offers the striking qualities of a slate grey combined with a soft and playful blue-violet, the more we look at it, the more we like it.

Pantone introduce this colour as conveying a “carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit, inquisitive and intriguing PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives.”

There is a futuristic and almost digital quality to this particular shade – the colour almost mimicking the blue light from screens and virtual spaces. The description also nods to the pandemic and reflects on the large periods of isolation we’ve endured. There are many words of optimism and starting afresh associated with this colour, a sentiment we can all get behind after the last couple of years whilst looking at the year ahead.

An interesting aspect to this specific violet is that it is an absolute step away from pastel tones, but is by no means a dark tone. Very Peri packs a punch as a totally balanced and confident yet somewhat unusual colour.

“Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”

We’ve used very similar tones in some of our own design schemes – using the blue-purple tone to create smart ambience but also to create professional and powerful areas within a space.
