Being shortlisted for Fit-out / Refurbishment of the Year at the Insider Wales Property Awards 2026 is a brilliant milestone for us at Wylde – so this week we’re sharing some insight on designing jaw-dropping yet functional fit-outs and outstanding refurbishments.
It’s easy to focus on the visual impact. The arrival moment and the statement features- while those elements matter, they’re only ever the visible outcome of something much deeper and planned. Truly outstanding spaces are built on a series of considered decisions, what we refer to as our ‘Wyldeology’ where every layer of the environment is working together to deliver performance, identity and experience.
Acoustics, for instance, rarely get the spotlight, yet they define how a space feels almost immediately. In modern workplaces, particularly those balancing technical focus with collaboration, poor acoustic control can undermine even the best design. Integrating acoustic performance into ceilings, walls and joinery from the outset creates environments that feel calm, controlled and purposeful, rather than reactive.
The same can be said for mechanical and electrical systems. When considered early, they allow for cleaner, more confident design moves. When left too late, they dictate compromise. We see M&E as part of the architecture something that can either quietly support the space or, when appropriate, be expressed to reinforce a building’s character, particularly in engineering-led environments.
Lighting is another layer where the difference between good and exceptional becomes clear. It’s no longer just about lux levels; it’s about rhythm, contrast and mood. A well-lit space supports different types of work; intuitively guiding behaviour without the need for instruction. It also has the power to elevate everyday moments, turning circulation areas and social spaces into something far more engaging.
Branding and wall treatments have also shifted significantly in recent years. The most effective spaces don’t rely on applied graphics alone they embed identity into the fabric of the building through sophisticated artwork. Through materials, tone, scale and subtle storytelling, brand becomes something you experience rather than something you simply see.
And then there’s the craft of the build itself. The success of any fit-out or refurbishment hinges on how well design intent is translated on site. This is where collaboration, coordination and attention to detail become critical. It’s not glamorous, (trust us!) but it’s where quality is either protected or lost.
Joinery, furniture and finishes are often grouped together, but each plays a distinct role. Bespoke joinery has the ability to anchor a space; defining zones, integrating function and reinforcing identity. Furniture brings flexibility and human comfort, shaping how people actually use the space day to day. Finishes tie everything together, influencing not just aesthetics but durability, maintenance and long-term value.
Perhaps the most overlooked aspect of all is change management. No matter how well designed a space is, its success ultimately depends on how people adopt it. Supporting clients through that transition and helping them understand or embrace new ways of working is what turns a completed project into a successful one.
What’s becoming increasingly clear across all our projects is that clients are looking for more than just refurbishment, they’re looking for reinvention. Spaces that not only look better, but work harder. Environments that reflect who they are today, while giving them the flexibility to evolve tomorrow! We’re always happy to join a project team, but we can also suggest specialists to work on each aspect of the design and installation. We have built up a group of trusted consultants and suppliers over the years. These are tried and tested companies and individuals that we can work with, specialising in the various disciplines to develop and deliver a successful project!
