It’s Senior Flexonics season! – we’re sharing some special insights to this project in the lead up to launching the project case study!
A significant part of the sustainability strategy for the project at Senior Flexonics was the reuse of existing furniture and materials. We were able to re-home approximately 85% of furniture from another client in Cardiff who was relocating and had chosen not to retain a large portion of their desks, chairs, and furnishings. Having originally specified this furniture nine years earlier, we had confidence in its quality and longevity.
Integrating these items into the new scheme required a detailed and time-intensive design process, carefully matching available stock with the new spatial and aesthetic vision. This approach demanded more effort than specifying new products, particularly in blending reused elements with newly introduced pieces in a cohesive and contemporary way.
In addition to furniture, a large quantity of acoustic ceiling rafts and light fittings were salvaged and reworked into new configurations and forms. This significantly reduced both cost and carbon footprint, while meaningfully supporting the aesthetic design principles and remaining ‘on-brand’.
Although reuse on this scale is uncommon due to the additional design and coordination effort required, the benefits were hugely substantial:
- Significant reduction in materials sent to landfill
- Lower project costs
- Reduced embodied carbon
- Demonstration of practical, large-scale reuse in a commercial setting
Keep your eyes peeled on the Wylde insights as over the next couple of weeks we’ll be discussing the innovational aspects of the project along with launching the full project case study and sharing some gorgeous final photos too. Enjoy the first peek at some of these finished snaps here too;
